First IEP meeting next Thursday — what do I actually ask for?

Started by Kate P · 17 January 2026

Got the meeting booked, feel completely out of my depth. What are the practical accommodations that actually made a difference for your kid? Don't want to walk in with nothing or with a 40-item wishlist.

Top 3 that moved the needle for us: movement breaks, extra time on tasks, and instructions given one-step-at-a-time + in writing. Start small and concrete.

Ask who is responsible for each accommodation and how it'll be reviewed. 'Movement breaks' means nothing if no one owns it. Get names and a review date.

Preferential seating (away from door/window), a quiet pass for when he's overwhelmed, and chunked assignments. Also — record/note who agreed to what.

This is gold, thank you. Going in with a clear top 3 + asking who owns each one. Feeling less terrified already.

Bring a support person if you can. Two sets of ears, and it shifts the power dynamic in the room a bit.
