Diagnosed at 7 last week and I cried in the carpark

Started by Priya N · 5 December 2025

Got the report on Tuesday. I don't know why I'm so emotional about it — part of me is relieved we finally have an answer, part of me feels like I missed it for years. The psych was lovely but it's a lot to take in. Did anyone else have a big reaction to the actual diagnosis day?

Carpark cries are a rite of passage in this club ❤️ I bawled in the Coles carpark after ours. Relief and grief at the same time is completely normal. You didn't miss anything — you got him assessed, that IS the catching up.

Mate I sat in the car for 40 mins. The grief bit surprised me too. Someone here told me 'you're grieving the road you thought you were on, not your kid' and that reframed it for me.

Be gentle with yourself this week. The diagnosis doesn't change who he is, it just gives you better tools. The relief gets bigger and the grief gets smaller, promise.

7 is honestly a great age to know. We didn't get answers til 11 and I wish we'd had those years. You're doing great.
