We have our first IEP (Individual Education Plan) meeting next week and I'm terrified. The school seems supportive but I've heard horror stories. What should I prepare? What questions should I ask? Any dos and don'ts?

Former teacher here! Biggest tip: come with specific, observable examples. Not "he can't focus" but "he needs the instruction repeated 3 times and loses track during multi-step tasks." Also bring a list of what WORKS — teachers need to know your child's strengths, not just challenges. And don't be afraid to ask for the plan in writing.

Ask about: preferential seating, movement breaks, how instructions are delivered (verbal + written), exam accommodations, and who the point of contact is for check-ins. Also ask how they'll MEASURE progress, not just set goals.

The vibe you want is collaborative, not adversarial. Go in assuming the teachers want to help (most do). Use phrases like "What can we do together to support..." rather than "You need to...". And take notes!
