We got the diagnosis last week and I'm overwhelmed. The paediatrician handed us a report, said 'ADHD combined type' and sent us on our way. I don't know what to read, who to call, what to do at school, or where to even begin. Help?

First — breathe. The diagnosis doesn't change your child. It just gives you a map. Start with: 1) Book a follow-up with the paed to ask ALL your questions. 2) Get an OT assessment if you haven't already. 3) Talk to the school SENCO about supports. 4) Read 'The Explosive Child' by Ross Greene. You don't have to do everything at once.

Welcome to the club nobody wanted to join but everybody's glad they found. Honestly, the biggest thing early on is adjusting YOUR expectations — not lowering them, just understanding that your kid's path will look different. And that's okay.

One thing I wish someone told me early: the diagnosis is a GIFT. It means you can stop guessing and start getting targeted help. Your kid hasn't changed — you've just got better information now.
