I dread 4pm every day. That's when the homework battle starts. My 10yo son with ADHD literally cannot sit and do worksheets after 6 hours at school. We end up yelling, he ends up crying, and I feel like the worst parent alive. Is homework really worth destroying our relationship over?

Short answer: no, it's not worth it. Talk to the teacher. Most will reduce the load or modify expectations once they understand the impact. Your relationship with your son is more important than any worksheet. Also — try moving homework to a completely different time. Some ADHD kids do better first thing in the morning before school.

We wrote a letter to the school saying we'd be capping homework at 20 minutes. Whatever gets done, gets done. The teacher pushed back initially but our psych backed us up. Best decision we ever made. Evenings are peaceful now.

As a teacher: most homework for primary school has minimal evidence behind it. If a parent told me it was causing this level of distress, I'd absolutely modify it. Please tell the teacher — we can't fix what we don't know about.
